Tallon Griekspoor stuns Finland’s Emil Ruusuvuori to advance to the quaterfinals

In the first singles’ match of the day at The Royal Tennis Hall, third-seed Tallon Griekspoor won against last year’s semi-finalist Emil Ruusuvuori. After a tight two-set match, he now advances to the quarter finals where he will meet Pavel Kotov who defeated Lorenzo Sonego.

In the first singles’ match Emil Ruusuvuori and Tallon Griekspoor battled each other on the Centre Court. Meeting for the third time this year, the Dutch got the best of last two encounters leading 2-0 in their head-to-head.

The Finn took the lead in the first set securing a break early on to make it 4-1. With his back against the wall, the World No. 25 clawed his way back into the match winning three games in a row. Despite, the momentum being against him, the 2022 semi-finalist Ruusuvuori the lead 5-4. He even had a set point on Griekspoor’s serve but the Dutchman continued his impressive defense to take the first set in a tiebreak.

In the second set, Tallon Griekspoor seemed to have found the key to counter the Finn’s game. After the match he admitted that he was happy to have secured a win after a tough opponent. “I had to find solutions and adapt to his new tactics.” When asked about his ambitions the rest of the tournament he declared “I come to tournaments to win them, so I am very happy to be here with such a great crowd”.

In the other matches of the day session, Roman Safiullin defeated Brazilian Thiago Seyboth Wild on Court No.1 to advance to the quarter finals of the BNP Paribas Nordic Open 2023. Court No1 was also the scene of Sonego’s defeat against the surprising Pavel Kotov who beat his opponent 6-4, 7-5.
